Cool and Possibly Life-Changing Gadget of the Day

I came across this gadget the other day, and, honestly, it's really cool. Verizon announced that they are going to be selling an extender to their wireless networks that works through a person's existing broadband connection. Now, having lived in the back woods of South Carolina where there is little Verizon service, as well as living in dorms made entirely of concrete that were black holes for cell service, I can see how this would be extremely useful. Not having cell phone service in the place you live is extremely frustrating. Such a device could have far-reaching consequences. How far along are personal, portable cell towers? Could this device help promote the extinction of telephone landlines? As VoIP (Voice over IP), broadband connections, and wireless cell networks become more popular, will people need their "old" telephones anymore? But will people pay $250 for their own personal cell tower? Does a person really need to be that connected to his cell phone at all times that he needs his own cell tower? As always, feel free to discuss in the comments. Cross-posted to the American Observer.
